Date: January 7, 2014

Bethesda -- Erek Barron has been named the President-Elect of the J. Franklyn Bourne Bar Association.

The Association, which was named after the Honorable J. Franklyn Bourne, a graduate of Howard School of Law and the first African-American judge in Prince George's County, serves primarily African-American attorneys in Montgomery and Prince George's Counties. Mr. Barron has been active in the Association throughout his career.

Mr. Barron co-chairs the firm's Administrative & Regulatory Law Practice Group and is a member of the Business Litigation Section. An experienced litigator and trial attorney, he primarily serves clients in the areas of complex civil litigation and white collar criminal defense. Additionally, he counsels businesses in corporate compliance matters. He has tried numerous cases to verdict and has an active civil and criminal appellate practice before state and federal courts of appeal.

Prior to private practice, Mr. Barron had a distinguished career in government. First, as a prosecutor in Maryland and at the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, DC, he investigated and prosecuted a variety of economic crimes and violent offenses. Next, he served as counsel and policy advisor to then-Senator Biden and the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. Mr. Barron was also responsible for a wide portfolio of domestic and international law enforcement issues, including policies regarding the prosecution of business organizations and enforcement policies under statutes such as the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Mr. Barron capped his government service as an appointee to the President's Transition Team from 2007 to 2008 where he worked with the U.S. Attorney General and other senior U.S. Department of Justice officials on justice and civil rights issues.

Beyond his involvement in the J. Franklyn Bourne Bar Association, Mr. Barron is also a leader within the national bar, including the American Bar Association and the National Bar Association. Currently, he co-chairs the ABA Litigation Section Criminal Litigation Committee and serves in the ABA House of Delegates. He also serves on the boards of the Maryland Legal Aid Bureau, Inc. and the Maryland Public Defender's Office.

Mr. Barron received his J.D. in 1999 from the George Washington University School of Law and an LL.M. in International and National Security Law in 2007.  He is admitted to practice in Maryland and the District of Columbia.
