Date: May 12, 2015

Baltimore -- Whiteford, Taylor & Preston is proud to announce that Tom Barbuti, a senior partner in the firm, is to be honored with the Distinguished Maryland Real Property Practitioner of the Year Award by the Real Property Section of the Maryland State Bar Association.  The award, to be formally presented June 12th at the MSBA Annual Meeting in Ocean City, Maryland, recognizes a Maryland real estate attorney best exemplifying the experience, technical skill, client service, integrity, collegiality, and courtesy for which all real estate lawyers strive.

Responding to news of the award, Managing Partner Marty Fletcher observed that “the recognition of Tom's professional achievements is richly deserved.  It acknowledges his place among the preeminent real estate practitioners in Maryland, both for his exceptional skills and experience and for his lifelong commitment to mentoring young lawyers.”

When asked for comments, several of Maryland's well known real estate lawyers, who submitted statements to the MSBA on Tom's behalf, struck similar themes:

“His expertise in real estate law is vast. . . . Tom Barbuti is well known among Maryland real estate lawyers as an expert in real property law, who shares his knowledge and expertise by mentoring and consulting with young lawyers and colleagues.”

“Tom's depth and breadth of knowledge and understanding of real property law and his commitment to developing the knowledge and professionalism of other members of the Maryland State Bar have distinguished him as a real property practitioner.  Tom is very highly regarded by many of his peers who often seek his advice and opinion on particularly difficult or complex issues or real property law.”

A member of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, Mr. Barbuti has decades of experience with complex real estate transactions.  He has particular experience with retail development and leasing, from acquisition through complex reciprocal easement agreements, commercial condominiums, development, financing, leasing and disposition.  Mr. Barbuti has handled complex development and mixed-use projects for numerous national developers and, on the retailer side, transactions involving the de-malling of shopping centers.

In addition to his professional activities, Mr. Barbuti has participated in public service projects with organizations including the National Association of Office and Industrial Properties.  He is a Trustee of the Maryland Historical Society.
