Recognized as one of the "Best Lawyers in America" and a Maryland "Super Lawyer," and by the prestigious publication Benchmark Litigation as a "Local Litigation Star," Mr. Tiller is widely known as one of the top technology and intellectual property litigators in the mid-Atlantic. He is co-chair of the firm's Intellectual Property and Technology practice group, which includes attorneys whose practice focus on both business and litigation issues, and is one of only twenty-four firms nationwide ranked in the top tier for Technology by U.S. News & World Report.

Mr. Tiller has handled a wide range of business and intellectual property disputes involving a variety of technologies, including software, internet applications, network architecture, manufactured products, and bio technologies.  These matters have related to a broad scope of industries including drug safety analysis, data access and replication, nuclear power plant safety, wireless telecommunications, sales management, academic admissions, and fiber optics, to name a few.  He also regularly advises clients on risk management and other business issues, essentially acting as outside general counsel for several clients over the years.  Admitted to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office, Mr. Tiller also assists clients in identifying, protecting and leveraging their intellectual property assets.

Fed. Circ. Revives Patent On De-Icing Roads With Molasses

The Federal Circuit on Wednesday revived a patent for a molasses byproduct used as a de-icing agent on roads, finding that the Patent Trial and Appeal Board didn’t present enough evidence to show that earlier sugar and rock salt-related inventions made the sugar-waste product obvious.

Defend Trade Secrets Act (DTSA) Signed into Law, May 11, 2016

On May 11, 2016, President Obama signed into law the Defend Trade Secrets Act (DTSA) creating a cause of action under federal law for trade secret misappropriation which previously had been governed by state common law and each state’s adoption of the Uniform Trade Secrets Act.   The law took effect immediately upon signing.

Maryland's Anti-Spam Law

On October 1, 2002, Maryland joined a growing number of states that have enacted laws to limit unsolicited e-mail or so-called “spam.” This new law (Md. Commercial Law Code Ann. § 14-3001 - 14-300) applies to any unsolicited e-mail sent from Maryland or to an e-mail address located in Maryland. A brief summary of the law follows.

Significant Win for Agrochemical Client

Steve Tiller, Barry Neuman and Peter Davis have obtained a significant victory for our client Willowood, LLC, a generic crop protection company, that will have nationwide reverberations in the agrochemical industry.  In an April 10 ruling, a federal district court  in Greensboro, NC held that copyright laws do not apply to labels that accompany federally-approved pesticide products.

Mr. Samek currently serves as Senior Vice President and Director of Government Services with Wilhelm Commercial Builders. He has over 25 years of program management and construction management experience in world-wide support with the US Army Corps of Engineers and DOD Acquisition.
