Appellate Practice

Although our attorneys typically argue before state and federal appellate courts in Maryland, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the District of Columbia, we also argue cases throughout the country's appellate courts, as well as in the United States Supreme Court. Our litigators are experienced appellate advocates. They are concise, persuasive and effective in both written submissions and oral presentations. Our firm is consistently at the forefront of emerging legal issues, and has created precedents, resulting in far-reaching benefits for not only our clients but entire industries.

For example, a team of our lawyers successfully convinced Maryland's highest court that punitive damage awards in the State must be reserved for the extremely rare instances where plaintiffs are able to prove actual malice. In addition to traditional appellate work, we also handle appeals before the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals. This includes matters dealing with patent and trademark issues, as well as government contracts. On a local level, our lawyers handle appeals from administrative agency decisions. These include appeals involving the Board of Physicians Quality Assurance, the Workers' Compensation Commission, the Department of Social Services, and the Insurance Commission. Moreover, we handle appeals to the National Labor Relations Board, and numerous state and local Human Relations Commissions.
