IP Issues in Higher Education

Our attorneys handle all issues related to Intellectual Property protection, management, and enforcement, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, domain names, trade dress and other brand protection devices, trade secrets, licensing/technology transfer matters, advertising and promotion, antitrust, unfair competition and other trade matters, and insurance coverage of intellectual property claims. Should it become necessary, we are well-experienced in handling IP-related litigation matters before an array of courts and tribunals.

Our attorneys have significant experience helping colleges and universities navigate the legal difficulties associated with a name change. While an institution's name change is often considered simply a public relations matter, there are a number of corporate and IP implications to such an undertaking from a legal standpoint. From examining charter documents to reviewing and protecting trademarks, our attorneys have assisted a prominent Maryland institution and advised numerous businesses through the name change process.

We have wide experience in tech transfer, working with university research parks and researchers throughout the nation. Regionally, we have relationships with local technology incubators, including the Chesapeake Innovation Center, the Emerging Technology Center - Canton, the Emerging Technology Center - Johns Hopkins Eastern, the NeoTech Incubator, the Silver Spring Innovator Center, the techcenter@UMBC, and TowsonGlobal, Business Globalization Center. We have represented both research institutions and spin-off companies as they participate in developing new products and markets out of university research projects. We have experience in creating, growing, funding and taking new companies public.
