Biography
BIOGRAPHY
Mr. Bretschneider, a registered patent attorney and recognized lawyer in Chambers USA, has a diverse practice that is concentrated on patent infringement litigation in the district courts and before the International Trade Commission (ITC), post-grant patent procedures including post-grant reviews, reexaminations and interferences, patent prosecution, patent licensing and related transactional work, and trademark litigation and prosecution. He represents U.S. and foreign corporations, and his diverse background includes working with a multitude of technologies in the electronics, semiconductor, polymer, composite material, medical device, pharmaceutical and automotive industries, among many others.
 
Mr. Bretschneider has been recognized as a leading lawyer by Chambers Global 2011, Chambers USA (2006 to 2013), Best Lawyers In America© (2011 and 2012), IAM 250 World's Leading Patent Litigators, The Washingtonian magazine and Euromoney's Expert Guides. Representative Experience

  • Defended challenges to a chemical and medical device manufacturing company's pioneer patents on technology relating to a method of DNA amplification that plays a critical role in shortening the length of time it takes to get DNA testing results – a service of particular use to crime labs. In a reexamination brought by a life sciences product company, the Board of Patent Appeals and interferences reversed all claim rejections and confirmed the patent claims, which are vital to the client's business.
  • Represented an electronics manufacturer against a multinational electronics conglomerate in two ITC trials, resulting in trial decisions confirming the client's patents.
  • Obtained a Markman ruling for a U.S. company in a patent litigation matter involving on-hold music and messaging technology. Due to the Markman ruling, the team significantly narrowed the plaintiff's claims through a series of motions for partial summary judgment, resulting in the ultimate dismissal of the action with prejudice.
