International Trade Agreements and US Assistance, Vietnam - WTP speaker

This panel, "International Trade Agreements and US Economic Development Assistance: Know where Vietnam is going based on where it’s been," is part of a Vietnam conference hosted by the New York State Bar Association, and will be moderated by Alexander Koff, Co-Chair of the International Group at WTP.  The speakers and their topics will be:

 ·         Mr Do Khac Chien, former Deputy Director of Copyright Office of Vietnam
Talk: Share his opinion on how Vietnamese agencies received international expertise through various development trade projects, using IPR regulations as case study.

 ·         Mr. John Bentley, former STAR Program Vietnam (the USAID-funded economic development program in Vietnam – operated for over 10 years), former UNDP-Vietnam (served within the Vietnam Ministry of Justice in late 1990s and early 2000s)
Talk: Share his opinion on how Vietnam has progressed since STAR’s founding, areas of success, and areas needed for growth, using her 10+ years in Vietnam and prior experience at law firms in Vietnam as examples.

 ·         Ms. Phan Cam Tu, former STAR Program Vietnam (the USAID-funded economic development program in Vietnam – operated for over 10 years) and Vietnamese attorney
Talk: Share her opinions on how Vietnam has progressed since STAR’s founding, areas of success, and areas needed for growth, using her 10+ years in Vietnam and prior experience at law firms in Vietnam as examples.

 ·         Mr. Robert Schiffer, head of the US-Vietnam Trade Council and former Special Assistant to Pete Peterson, first US Ambassador to Vietnam.

 ·         Mrs Nguyen Nhu Quynh, Deputy Chief Inspector of MOST (Vietnam Ministry of Science and Technology)
Talk: Share her opinions on Vietnam and its transformation since the BTA. 

 ·         Mr. Alexander Koff, Partner and Co-Chair of the International Group at the U.S. law firm, Whiteford, Taylor & Preston LLP.  Served as first legal adviser for the program that became the STAR Program - resided one year in Vietnam as Legal Advisor helping the Vietnamese government implement economic reforms from January to December 2000
Talk: Share his opinions on the increased trade with Vietnam in the last 13 years, opportunities offered by the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), and future growth.
