Paralegal - Community Associations (Washington, DC)

This position works directly with the firm’s Community Associations practice attorneys to prepare for and file upcoming cases relating to the collection of past due assessments for the firm’s Community Association clients.
 
Responsibilities

  • Obtain and apply Federal Acts and State Statutes as well as contractual guidelines and restrictions across a large volume of collection matters for our Community Association clients.
  • Prepare and reconcile account balances in accordance with the collection authority provisions of the community’s governing documents as well as any limiting factors associated with federal and/or state guidelines.
  • Work with various Community Associations attorneys to draft communications, lawsuits, motions and other case filings while maintaining an index/tracking system to monitor and proactively move the matter through the collection process in a timely manner and ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Calculate account payoff values and provide payoff information to homeowners and mortgage companies.
  • Create reports and other documents for attorneys based on case specifications and attorneys’ requests.
  • Build and maintain professional relationships while regularly communicating with management companies as well as our Community Association clients’ Board members and personnel.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining a system to ensure deadlines are being met.
  • Utilize research resources and existing case files to apply to pending matters.
  • Monitor changes to guidelines or regulations and communicates findings to colleagues and attorneys.
 
Skills and Abilities
  • 1-3 years of collection experience
  • Solid understanding of basic financial and/or accounting concepts
  • Ability to follow instructions and adapt to change
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and organizational abilities
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and manage heavy volume of work
  • Ability to handle pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Maintains a consistent level of professionalism, with clients, debtors, and colleagues
  • Ability to easily navigate a computer, software platforms, and multiple web-based systems
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word)
 
Qualifications
  • 1-3 years collection or law firm experience
