Eminent Litigator Scott Greathead Joins Whiteford in New York

Date: September 19, 2022
NEW YORK—Whiteford, Taylor & Preston LLP is pleased to announce that R. Scott Greathead has joined the firm as senior counsel, resident in its New York office.

A seasoned litigator, Mr. Greathead has more than 40 years of experience as a trial lawyer and appellate advocate in the state and federal courts in New York and across the country on behalf of corporate, institutional and individual clients. His experience includes securities and financial services litigation, products liability, professional malpractice, real estate and construction litigation, bankruptcy litigation, and executive employment matters.

From 1984 to 1990, Mr. Greathead served as the First Assistant Attorney General of New York State under Attorney General Robert Abrams, where he was responsible for some of the office’s most important cases, including the Hooker Chemical Company-Love Canal litigation, the Tawana Brawley investigation and several major tax evasion investigations and prosecutions.

“We are especially pleased to welcome Scott to the firm,” said Managing Partner Martin Fletcher. “He is widely respected as an effective advocate for clients in complex litigation matters. We see immediate synergies with our Litigation Department which, with over 90 lawyers, represents regional and national clients and, increasingly, is handling matters involving non-U.S. concerns.”

Mr. Greathead is well-known as an international human rights advocate and founder of several prominent public interest organizations, including New York Lawyers for the Public Interest and Human Rights First. He has visited more than a dozen countries on human rights fact-finding missions for Human Rights First, Human Rights Watch and other organizations, and has written extensively on human rights and corporate social responsibility in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and other publications.

In 2017, he co-produced with Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall the award-winning documentary Finding Oscar, which tells the story of his pro bono political asylum client Oscar Ramirez, who survived a massacre in Guatemala after being kidnapped as a three-year-old by one of the soldiers who murdered his mother and eight siblings. Mr. Greathead also counsels major corporations on global risk and CSR issues as CEO of World Monitors, Inc., a consulting firm that provides businesses with strategies for risk prevention in the global economy.
